How-To: Affordable Fall Flower Arrangement

I’m writing this post for everyone who has dropped $100 at a florist on an arrangement that didn’t turn out as beautiful as they expected it to be. The floral arrangement I’m going to break down for you cost me $35.00- and it looks like a $100 bouquet.

Start with your STATEMENT FLOWER:

  • For this arrangement my statement flower was a dahlia in very shades of pink and orange with a mix of white ones. I purchased my statement flower from the Dahlia Shed in Middletown, Rhode Island- I think it was about $20 for 7 stems. They have such a variety of dahlias and are so reasonably priced for the quality!

  • I always include a flower that is white in an arrangement as it brings the eye in to contrasting between the various colors of the bouquet. If you have an arrangement thats all orange, you won’t see the details of each flower.

  • For my bouquet I purchased seven dahlia stems- I think odd numbers look better in bouquet and aesthetic balance.

  • Remove any leaf that is at the bottom of the stem that will sit in the vase’s water and make sure to trim all stems at an angle.

Next comes the ASSISTANT FLOWER:

  • This is the flower that compliments the statement flower.

  • My assistant flower go-to is usually a hydrangea. A flower that has a lot of fullness to bring shape to the bouquet.

  • I feel like the assistant flower is just more subtle than the statement flower so a large bunch of these will make the statement flower pop!

  • Cut off any leaf that is at the bottom of the stem that will sit in the vase’s water and trim all stems at an angle.

  • I purchase my hydrangeas from Stop & Shop- they’re usually $5.99 for a bunch, which typically has 3 stems in each.

Finish off with the FILLER FLOWER/GREENS:

  • Literally ANYTHING, but Baby’s Breath. I feel like baby’s breath is just a knock-off filler green that cheapens the appearance of bouquet. Go for honestly anything else haha.

  • I like to go for Italian Ruscus; it’s bright and has beautiful shape to each leaf. This kind of filler makes it look like you picked your flowers fresh from your garden, which I think is ultimately everyone’s goal when putting together a bouquet- natural and organic-looking; well at least that’s my goal.

  • Two different types of greens is nice as well for a bouquet like this!

  • I purchase my filler greens from Stop & Shop, which are usually $5.99 for a bunch- depending on the size of the bouquet you are creating you’ll probably only need 1 or 2 bunches.
